Harold Joseph Thompson

September 22, 1925 — January 28, 2015

Dr. Harold Joseph Thompson, 89, of Attleboro, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 28, 2015, at Sturdy Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Elaine A. (Ferraro) Thompson to whom he was married on May 15, 1954. Born September 22, 1925, in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the son of Harold Irving and Sarah Ann (Dunn) Thompson. He was raised and educated in Malden where he graduated from Malden High School. He attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine before taking leave to enlist in the military. He served in the United States Air Force from March 1944 through the end of WWII. After the war, he returned to Colby and graduated with the Class of 1947. Dr. Thompson attended Tufts University School of Medicine, obtaining his M.D. in 1953. His residency was at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and it was there that he met the love of his life, Elaine Ferraro. They were married for over 60 years. He practiced Urology at Sturdy Memorial for many years, where he served on numerous hospital committees. Dr. Thompson had a passion for healing and devoted himself to his patients. He served on the Board of Directors of the Community VNA in Attleboro for many years and was a longtime member of the Attleboro Lions Club. He had a true appreciation for the good things in life: food, music, gardening, walks in nature, the ocean. He loved to dance. He played the violin and cultivated a beautiful rose garden. He always found time to give caring attention to every individual, even in his large family with many children and grandchildren. Harold is survived by his wife Elaine; his loving children Jacquelyn, married to George Earley; Janice, married to Jim Moore; Michael, married to Lisa Moore Thompson; John; Joan, married to Mark Bilodeau; and Mary, married to Neil Higgins; twelve grandchildren: Daniel, Gregory, Joseph and Samuel Moore; Shane and Erika Early; Amanda and Andrew Bilodeau; Isaac and Jesse Higgins; Alysha and David Thompson; and three great-grandchildren: Avery, Kinley and Weston Moore. He was the brother of the late Joan Chisholm. Public visitation is respectfully omitted. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, 105 Stanley Street, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with the Rev. Thomas A. Frechette, Pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors in North Purchase Cemetery, Attleboro will be private.
