George Robert Withers

George "Bob" Robert Withers, 89, of South Main Street, Attleboro; formerly of Christopher Heights, Attleboro and a longtime resident of Harvard Street, Attleboro; died on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Golden Living Center - Garden Place, Attleboro where he had resided for the past four years following a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Jean Doris (Walker) Withers to whom he was married on September 23, 1950 and who died on February 18, 2007. Born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada on February 10, 1923, he was a son of the late George P. and Florence M. (Bailey) Withers. He was a graduate of Bromfield School in Harvard and later attended Georgetown University while in the military. Mr. Withers served admirably during the World War II era serving with the United States Army 406th Infantry Regiment and was deployed in Central Europe/Rhineland from January 26, 1943 until March 5, 1946. He was employed for decades as the lumber foreman for the former M. F. Ashley Lumber Company in Attleboro and later at Chace Building Supply. A longtime member of Second Congregational Church, Mr. Withers sang in the church choir for many years and participated in the "Players" acting group. His favorite pastimes included reading, gardening, playing bridge and horseshoes. He was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox. Mr. Withers was a member of the Attleboro Lodge of Elks #1014 and the Eastern Star Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Rehoboth. He leaves three sons: Robert D. Withers and his wife, Julie E. (Lincicome) Withers, of Attleboro; Stephen K. Withers, Sr. and his wife, Barbara (Watkins) Withers, of Attleboro and Keith R. Withers of Attleboro; seven grandchildren: Stephen K. Withers, Jr. of Attleboro; Jennifer (Withers) Candage of Cumberland, Rhode Island; Kyle Withers of San Francisco, California; Amy Withers of Chandler, Arizona; Daniel Withers of Attleboro; Greg Withers of Haverhill and Jesse Withers of Attleboro; two great grandchildren: Zachary and Elliott Withers both of Attleboro; two sisters: Peggy Carpenter of Dartmouth and Yvonne Ogilvie of Attleboro; a brother: James Withers in Florida and numerous extended family members and friends. He was the brother of the late William Withers and John Withers. Family and Friends are cordially invited to attend visitation on Thursday, May 17, 2012 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Funeral services will be private on Friday, May 18, 2012. Burial will follow in Oak Knoll Cemetery, Rehoboth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Withers' name may be made to either the Attleboro Library Gift Fund, 74 North Main Street, Attleboro, MA 02703 or to the Second Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 50 Park Street, Attleboro, MA 02703.
