Eugene "Gene" Harvey Somerby

Eugene "Gene" Harvey Somerby, 89, of North Attleborough, MA passed away on Friday, March 5, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his loving daughters.  He went to join his late wife, Ethel June (Pierce) Somerby who died on May 19, 2018, in Heaven.  They were united in marriage on November 16, 1952.
Born in Winthrop, MA on May 15, 1931, he was a son of the late Ralph and Ella (Saunders) Somerby.  He was a 1949 graduate of Essex County Agricultural School in Hawthorne, MA having studied poultry.
He served on the Saugus Fairs Committee from 1946 - 1949 and was described as "the silver lining in our dark cloud."  Mr. Somerby was a member of the Poultry Club from 1946 - 1949 and in 1946 earned 1st and 2nd Place in the Poultry Show.  He was the recipient of the 2nd prize in 1948 and 3rd prize in 1949.
Mr. Somerby resided in Saugus for most of his life prior to relocating to North Attleborough in December 2017.  He started selling eggs after school and completed six years of service in the Massachusetts Army National Guard as a member of the 101st Combat Engineers.  Mr. Somerby was the owner and operator of Somerby Contractors, a company that specialized in asphalt driveways, ice control sanding, septic tanks, and water & sewer service connections.  He was also a certified Title V Systems Inspector for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
His business card whimsically said:
"When a girl loves a fellow, it's her business.
When a fellow loves a girl, that is his business.
When they get married, it is their business.
And on the other side is MY business."
He will be lovingly remembered for being a wonderful father and grandfather who absolutely loved his family more than anything in the world.  He enjoyed dancing, especially ballroom, square dancing, and line dancing.  He and his family enjoyed spending time at his summer home in Bradford, NH.
He leaves his beloved children: Sandra S. Saunders and her husband, Frederick Saunders, of North Attleborough, MA; and Diane E. Carolan and her husband, Robert Carolan Jr., of Saugus, MA.  He was the adoring grandfather of William Saunders (Jackie) of Braintree, MA, Diane Osborne (Andrew) of North Attleborough, and David Saunders (Elisa) of Concord, NH.  He was the proud great-grandfather of Alexander, Ella, Christopher, Nicholas, Andrew and Lily Saunders of Braintree, MA; Lyra and Enoch Osborne of North Attleborough; and Bennett and Audrey Saunders of Concord, NH.  He was the brother of the late Alice Staniunas.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date when it is safer to gather.  Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations made in memory of Mr. Somerby may be made to any of the following organizations: Alzheimer's Association, Beacon Hospice or the Associate Holiday Fund at The Branches in North Attleborough, MA.
