Ernani "Ernie" Charles Vergano

December 19, 1937 — July 19, 2021

Ernani "Ernie" Charles Vergano, 83, of Attleboro, MA, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 19, 2021.  He was the beloved husband of Egidia Susan (Pennetta) Vergano, whom he married on June 27, 1959.
Born on December 19, 1937, in Union City, NJ, he was the son of the late Peter Dino Vergano and the late Mary Livia (Savio) Vergano.
Raised and educated in West New York, NJ, he was a graduate of Memorial High School, Class of 1955.  Ernie then received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the former Newark College of Engineering, now the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he was a member of Phi Beta Tau fraternity. He received a second Master's in Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He was a licensed professional engineer, moving to Massachusetts in 1966 to work at Texas Instruments in Attleboro. He held professional positions over the years, retiring from VR Industries in Warwick, RI, as Vice-President of Operations in 2005.
A caring, generous, and extraordinarily civic-minded man, Ernie was actively involved in a number of organizations throughout his life, including President of Friends of Capron Park; a member of the Knights of Columbus - St. John's Council; a member and past President of the former Attleboro Sons of Italy; a member of MA State Sons of Italy where he chaired various committees; a member of the Board of Directors of the former Human Services of Southeastern Massachusetts; a member of the Advisory Board of Sandcastle Resort in Provincetown, MA; as a member of the former Attleboro Area Chamber of Commerce, having been named Man of the Year; and for many years with Junior Achievement in both the Attleboro area and Rhode Island.
Ernie was a man of deep faith and devotion. He was a former communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Attleboro where he was actively involved and proudly served as a catechism teacher. He then became a communicant of Transfiguration of the Lord Parish - St. Mark in Attleboro Falls, where he was actively involved as a Eucharistic minister and, given his love of music and singing, as a Cantor and member of the church choir. He also served as co-chair of the book room at the annual church fairs with his wife.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious smile. Ernie was a man of diverse interests: he was an avid reader and freshwater fly fisherman, always looking forward to his twice-yearly fishing trips to New Hampshire with his son, Michael. He enjoyed gardening; playing golf; bird watching; and traveling, especially to Italy and annual trips to Provincetown with his family. After retirement, Ernie and Egidia relished spending their winters in West Palm Beach, FL.  He had a love of music, especially classical, and enjoyed playing the piano. More than anything, Ernie cherished being in the company of his beloved family.
In addition to his wife, Egidia, he leaves his loving children:  Marianne Vergano-Laughton and her husband, Joseph Laughton, of Hudson, MA; Michael G. Vergano and his wife, Cindy (Mousseau) Vergano, of Cumberland, RI; and Egidia M. Vergano and her husband, Joseph Smith, of Exeter, RI.  He was the proud grandfather of Stephanie Dubois and her husband, Garrett Dubois, of Attleboro, MA; Evan Vergano of Cumberland, RI; Maris Laughton of Washington, DC; and Michelina Smith of Exeter, RI; and the adoring great-grandfather of Declan Dubois and Fallon Dubois, both of Attleboro, MA. Ernie was the brother of Dino C. Vergano and his wife, Dolores (Ferris) Vergano, of Wayne, NJ, and leaves many nieces and nephews, their families, and many dear friends.
A visitation, Mass of Christian Burial, and graveside service will be held privately. A Celebration of Ernie's life will take place at a later date.
