Eleanor R. Preston

Eleanor R. (Rawson) Preston, 93, of Woonsocket, RI; formerly of Cumberland, RI; died on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at the Oakland Grove Health Care Center in Woonsocket, RI. She was the wife of the late Herbert James Preston, Jr. to whom she was married on February 20, 1943 and who died on February 4, 2005. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on October 1, 1921, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Alice (Woodhead) Rawson. She was raised and educated in Pawtucket, RI where she graduated from the former Pawtucket High School in 1939 and was a 1941 graduate of LaSalle College in Newton. She was employed as a secretary for various companies prior to her retirement. Mrs. Preston was a member of the Arnold Mills United Methodist Church in Cumberland, RI where she served her church in numerous capacities. She was an ardent square dancer with her husband and enjoyed traveling around the globe. Mrs. Preston was a longtime volunteer at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island in Pawtucket, enjoyed playing bridge, was a member of the AARP and the Cumberland Red Hatters. She leaves three daughters: Marilyn P. Askevold and her husband, George F. Askevold, of Campton, NH; Janice Preston of Dayville, CT and Nancy E. Preston and her husband, Andrew A. Hawkins, of Windham, NH; a granddaughter: Jennifer (Caito) Jarret; two great grandchildren: Ava and Camille Jarret and several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. She was the sister of the late Florence Skitt and was the beloved companion of her late feline friend, "Joey". Private visitation and funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2015 in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with Rev. Thomas Conboy, officiating. Private burial will be in Arnold Mills Cemetery, Cumberland, RI. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Franklin Farm Community Garden, 142 Abbott Run Valley Road, Cumberland, RI 02864.
