Eleanor M. (Hamilton) DeVany, 89, of Raymond Hall Drive, North Attleboro, died on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island from injuries sustained in a single car motor vehicle accident on Landry Avenue in North Attleboro on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. She was the wife of the late Guy Spaulding DeVany, founding publisher of the Sun Chronicle newspaper in Attleboro to whom she was married in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on June 26, 1949 and who died on November 28, 2003. Born in Lake Preston, South Dakota on February 2, 1922, she was the only daughter born to the late Hugh and Gladys (Hamilton) Hamilton. She was a graduate of Sioux Falls (South Dakota) High School in 1939 at the age of 17 and attended Sioux Falls College for two years prior to transferring to Yankton College where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1943. During World War II, Mrs. DeVany trained with the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. In her youth, she worked summers at Sylvan Lake Lodge in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota and was an assistant to the dean at the Chapel at the University of Chicago. She was an educator having taught English and Latin at Vermillion High School in Vermillion, South Dakota and upon moving to Massachusetts she was a teachers aide at the former North Rehoboth School for 11 years. A resident of North Attleboro since 1988, she previously resided in Attleboro since arriving in Massachusetts in 1958. Mrs. DeVany attended Candleberry Chapel in Attleboro. She was a member of P.E.O., the North Purchase Club, the Play Readers Club and the Attleboro Garden Club. Mrs. DeVany was also a longtime volunteer at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing in various choruses. She will be lovingly remembered as a woman of elegance and grace. She leaves two daughters: Jane Elizabeth DeVany of Attleboro and Anne Louise DeVany of West Falmouth, Maine; a son: Daniel Charles DeVany of Centreville, Virginia; a sister-in-law: Arlene DeVany of Vermillion, South Dakota and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Hugh Hamilton. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation on Thursday, September 1, 2011 from 5:00 7:00 PM in the Memorial Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Private funeral services will be held in the Memorial Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with the Rev. Kenneth Boyle, Pastor, of Candleberry Chapel, Attleboro, officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Attleboro. Childrens room available during visitation.
