Eleanor "Ellie" Gloria (Shields) Bertino, 75, longtime North Attleboro, MA resident and educator, passed away in the comfort of her home on August 2, 2023.
Born in Boston, MA on December 15, 1947, Ellie was the daughter of the late Thomas Shields from Cambridge, MA and the late Mary (McGrath) Shields from Boston, MA.
Ellie was raised and educated in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston, attended St. Columbkille School and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from the former Boston State College, now known as University of Massachusetts - Boston.
Mrs. Bertino enjoyed her 35-year career as a second grade teacher at the Martin School in North Attleboro, retiring in 2017. Following her retirement, she happily served as a volunteer at the school and enjoyed keeping in touch with her fellow teachers and administrators and seeing her former students around town.
Ellie was a communicant of the Transfiguration of the Lord Parish - St. Mark in Attleboro Falls, MA.
In earlier years, Ellie was involved in her town government as a Member of the RepresentativeTown Meeting and Finance Committee in North Attleboro.
Ellie was an ardent reader and treasured every moment she spent creating lifelong memories to cherish with her family. She would often recall with fondness her trip to Ireland with family and friends following her retirement. Ellie also enjoyed the company of her former school colleagues and friends.
Ellie leaves her cherished family, including two children: Anthony J. Bertino and his wife, Maria R. Bertino, of North Attleboro, MA and Caryn M. McGrath and her husband, Jason A. McGrath,of North Attleboro, MA; beloved grandchildren: Ethan McGrath, Sofia Bertino, Jackson McGrath and Dominic Bertino; her siblings: Ann Marie Tolisano and her husband, Steven Tolisano, of North Attleboro, MA and Ken Shields and his wife, Pat Shields, of Oviedo FL; many extended family members and dear friends.
Family and friends are warmly welcome to attend Visitation on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, MA.
A Private Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, MA, with graveside services to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery and Arboretum, North Attleboro, MA.
