Eleanor Bassler

September 5, 1921 — January 16, 2022

Eleanor S. Bassler, 100, of Attleboro, MA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 16, 2022, surrounded by her family.  She was the beloved wife of the late Karl F. Bassler III for 51 years and the beloved mother of the late Sandra E. Bassler.
Born September 5, 1921, in West Ossipee, New Hampshire, she was the daughter of the late Ethel L. (Moody) Hobbs Lee, Charles W. Lee, and Herbert E. Hobbs.
Eleanor moved to Attleboro as a young child and attended Attleboro schools.  In 1938 she graduated from Attleboro High School where she met Karl Bassler.  They were married in 1942 just prior to his enlistment into the US Army Air Forces during WWII.
Karl and Eleanor started K. F. Bassler Co., Inc., a tool & die and metal stamping company, in 1945 where she held the positions of Treasurer, President, and finally, Chief Historian.  She considered many of those who worked for the company as extended family.
She was a very active member of the Second Congregational Church in Attleboro where, over time, she served as church secretary, a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, a volunteer on many committees and church fairs, and was a member of Martha Circle.
Eleanor had been an active member of the Pierian and New Century Clubs, Order of the Eastern Star, Attleboro Garden Club, Highland Country Club, Bearcroft Swim & Tennis Club and volunteer for the Attleboro Public Library and Sturdy Memorial Hospital.  She was also honored as an Attleboro Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow.
She was a savvy bridge player, a gifted knitter and an avid reader, gardener and world traveler with her husband and family.  She loved spending time with her family and friends during many summers and weekends at her home on Lake Winnipesaukee, attending performances at the Barnstormers Theatre, long boat rides, sitting in the sun and reading a good book.
Coming from a very small family, Eleanor's friends were considered like family.  Later in life, when many of them stopped driving, she assumed the roll of chauffeuring her gang to luncheons and events until giving up the wheel at age 95.
Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Karla L. Bassler of Attleboro, MA; her son, Karl F. "Rick" Bassler IV and his wife, Virginia M. (McCarthy) Bassler, of North Attleboro, MA; and her grandchildren: Erin E. Bassler of Franklin, MA, and Mark F. Bassler of North Attleboro, MA.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church, Park Street, Attleboro, MA.
Burial at North Purchase Cemetery was private.
The family would like to thank the staff at Christopher Heights in Attleboro and Daggett Crandall Newcomb Home in Norton for the wonderful care they gave to Eleanor.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Eleanor's name may be made to the Friends of the Attleboro Public Library, 74 N. Main St. Attleboro, MA 02703 or HopeHealth Hospice (formerly Community VNA), 10 Emory St. Attleboro, MA 02703 or the Second Congregational Church, 50 Park St. Attleboro, MA 02703.
