Edith Lillian (Arvidson) Layton, R.N., 89, of East Fourth Street, Attleboro, died peacefully following a short illness at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro on Tuesday, November 27, 2012. She was the wife of the late Addison L. Layton who died in 1991. Born in the same house she presently resided on August 22, 1923, Mrs. Layton was the daughter of the late Carl and Elsa P. (Thorson) Arvidson. She was raised and educated in Attleboro where she was a 1941 graduate of Attleboro High School and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Nursing in Providence, Rhode Island with the Class of 1944. As a registered nurse, Mrs. Layton was employed at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro for more than 30 years having worked primarily in the emergency room prior to her retirement in 1985. A lifelong Attleboro resident, Mrs. Layton was also a lifelong member of the Evangelical Covenant Church where she was active in church affairs, fundraisers and various organizations. She enjoyed the times spent knitting, crocheting and reading. Mrs. Layton was an ardent baker and will be remembered for her delicious coffee bread. Her truest joy was that time spent with family and friends creating lifelong memories to cherish. She leaves three children: Robert Arthur Layton and his wife, Linda J. (Cook) Layton, of Rochester, New Hampshire; Judith Marie Whiteacre and her husband, Glenn M. Whiteacre, of St. Charles, Missouri and Richard A. Layton and his wife, Lisa A. (Rayball) Layton of Attleboro; eight grandchildren: Wendi Layton Tuttle and her husband, Jamie Tuttle; Shari Pantanella and her husband, Robert Pantanella,; Allison Whiteacre Brinkopf and her husband, Jeff Brinkopf; Sharon Whiteacre; Laura A. Jackson and her husband, Kevin Jackson; Kara Layton Lehane and her husband, Brian Lehane; Tonya Layton Walker and her husband, Timothy and Patrick C. Layton; 14 great grandchildren: Alex, Presley, Erin, Miah, Max, McKenzie, Olivia, Leighton, Abigail, Clark, Benjamin, Grace, Emma and Aidan; several nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends. She was the sister of the late Carl Arthur Arvidson. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation on Monday, December 3, 2012 from 10:00 - 11:00 AM in the Evangelical Covenant Church, 841 North Main Street - Route 152, Attleboro. Those in need of a ride to visitation may call the funeral home at (508) 695-0200 to make an advance reservation for such gratis transportation. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Funeral Service following visitation on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 11:30 AM in the sanctuary of the Evangelical Covenant Church, 841 North Main Street - Route 152, Attleboro, with the Rev. Douglas J. Bixby, Senior Pastor, officiating. The funeral procession will proceed by foot to the graveside service at North Purchase Cemetery adjacent to the church. Family and friends will be cordially invited to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshment in the Fellowship Hall of the Evangelical Covenant Church following cemetery services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mrs. Layton's name may be made to either the Evangelical Covenant Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 208, Attleboro, MA 02703 or to the ACS Greater Attleboro Relay for Life, "All in the Family" Team, 10 Cote Street, Attleboro, MA 02703.
