Douglas Edward ("Elvis") McCarthy, 50, of Shearwater Drive, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2013. He was the beloved and loving husband of Shirley M. (Winnegge) McCarthy to whom he was married on December 27, 1980. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 6, 1962, he was a son of Russell J. McCarthy of Quincy and the late Ruth Marie (McLean) McCarthy, and the step-son of Madeline McCarthy of Quincy. He was a long-time resident of Norton, Massachusetts, where he was raised and educated, and where he was a 1980 graduate of Norton High School. Douglas was a dedicated, hard-working man who most recently was employed by Home Depot as the Merchandising Execution Team (MET) Supervisor in South Carolina and Georgia. He previously worked as a valued member of the Home Depot MET in Massachusetts, as well as having owned a bar in Mansfield, and working for National Lumber, T.R. White, Corcoran Jennison Companies, D.F. Pray, and Grossman's, leaving his special individual mark wherever he went. One of his passions in life was music, and he loved to DJ, entertaining and pleasing crowds with his unique Elvis performances. He would jump at the chance to play guitar with his favorite local bands. An avid sports enthusiast, he was a fan of the Patriots, Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics. Douglas enjoyed time spent playing hockey, racing go-karts with his brother, attending NASCAR races with his family, playing golf, and dancing. Always putting others before himself, he would frequently volunteer for many local causes, from bike runs to acting as a DJ for those he may not have even known but heard about from others. He was a dedicated member of the Norton Tri-centennial Committee. Something of a local celebrity in his own right, he appeared as Elvis Presley in an Alberto's Restaurant commercial, served as a DJ for the Town of Norton First Night, and performed as Elvis throughout the Norton 300th Anniversary parade. Douglas continued his volunteering spirit while living on Hilton Head Island, and will be fondly remembered by many organizations and establishments. Douglas proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk. He enlisted on June 26, 1980 and honorably served until his date of separation on April 16, 1984. He was the recipient of the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and the Navy's 1st Good Conduct Award. Douglas would always go out of his way to express his personal gratitude to any military personnel whom he noticed to be in uniform. In addition to his cherished wife, father and step-mother, he leaves his beloved son, Douglas Russell McCarthy of Norton; his loving siblings: Kenneth Paul McCarthy and his wife Carol H. (Gray) of North Attleboro, Susan M. (McCarthy) Carreiro and her husband Richard C. of Norton, James R. McCarthy of North Attleboro, and Linda A. Salisbury of Norton; his caring sisters and brothers-in-law: Theresa and David Mayman of Attleboro, Judith and James Watson of Norton, Joan and Everett Courchine of North Carolina, and Delores and Ernest Bowen of Florida; his many loving step-sisters and step-brothers including his very special step-sister, Michelle Loonie; and his wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins. His late mother-in-law, "Mums", held a unique place in his heart. Douglas will be unbelievably missed for his sensitive, generous, and loving nature by his devoted family and many caring friends.
