Dorothy Ann Martin, 97, formerly of Washington Street, Dorchester, passed away peacefully with her family and friends at her bedside on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at Epoch of Norton where she had been a resident for the past six years. Born, raised and educated in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the youngest daughter of the late Daniel T and Mary (Holland) Martin and the beloved sister of the late Helen J Martin, Francis T Martin and William Martin. Miss Martin was a 1934 graduate of Girl's Latin School in Boston. She later earned her Bachelor's degree in education with a major in English Literature from Teachers College, followed by her Master's degree in education. A retiree of the City of Boston School district, she held teaching appointments at the Mary Hemenway and Patrick O'Hearn Schools in Dorchester for more than 40 years. Ms. Martin was adored by family and friends and will always be remembered for her wit, humor, grace, generosity and childlike enthusiasm for life. She was an ardent reader, lifelong learner and dedicated teacher. Her travels included Ireland, England, Austria, Switzerland, Oregon, California and most of the East Coast from Maine to Florida. She appreciated the Fine Arts, Music and Theater and was praised for her direction of many school holiday programs, inspiring listeners with her wonderful singing voice. She loved the Ocean, the East Wind, Castle Island, ice cream and an expansive sweep of blue sky. She cherished time spend with family and friends and will be missed and fondly remembered for her words of encouragement and wisdom given over afternoon tea in her cheery blue kitchen. She was a former communicant of St. Gregory's Parish in Dorchester. More recently, Ms. Martin was a communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Norton, since residing in the community for the past 11 years. She leaves a nephew: William T Martin of Bend, Oregon; two nieces: Ann Martin- Segrini of Gainesville, Florida and Joan Weston of Pelham, New Hampshire; two additional generations of loving nieces and nephews and many dear and devoted friends. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation on Saturday, November 15, 2014, from 8:00 - 9:00 AM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. A children's room is available during visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, One Power Street, Norton. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Boston. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made, to the Norton Public Library, 68 East Main Street, Norton, MA 02766.
