David Randall Powers

David Randall Powers, 82, of Canterbury Woods, Garfield Avenue, Attleboro, died peacefully on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the Lifecare Center of Attleboro. His daughter, Nancy Powers, was by his side when he died. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Ann (Berry) Powers to whom he was married for almost 57 years and who died on April 5, 2008. Born in Portsmouth, Virginia on April 26, 1928, he was a son of the late Melville and Lola (Werth) Powers. Mr. Powers was graduated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. After graduating from MIT he signed on as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Ordinance Corps. There he worked as a scientist in the 1951 nuclear weapons test in Eniwetok and Nevada. Mr. Powers served honorably from March 30, 1949 until his discharge on March 2, 1952. In 1954 earned his Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mr. Powers was employed in business management for many years having last worked at his own company, Hybrid Enclosures, in Attleboro, prior to his retirement in 1991. Previously, he had been employed as a manager for seventeen years at Texas Instruments in Attleboro. This included a three year move to Adelaide, Australia as Managing Director of TI Australia Ltd. As a longtime member of Murray Unitarian Universalist Church in Attleboro, he served his church community as Governor of Finance and as a member of the church choir. Since moving to Canterbury Woods, he offered his skills as Treasurer and President of the Residence Council. In particular, he helped found the Councils Country Store. His favorite pastimes included reading, tennis, house projects, high fidelity and spending time with family and friends. To those who knew him well, he will be remembered by his happy singing and whistling at any time of the day. Mr. Powers is survived by two daughters: Nancy Powers of Sturbridge and Carol Powers of Orinda, California. He was predeceased by his daughter, Joan Powers and a brother, Donald Powers. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 2 PM at Murray Unitarian Universalist Church, 505 North Main Street Route 152, Attleboro with the Rev. Sandra D. Fitz-Henry, officiating. His ashes will lay to rest in Murray Unitarian Universalist Churchs Memorial Garden along side his wifes ashes. Following church services, an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Powers name may be made to Murray Unitarian Universalist Church, 505 North Main Street, Attleboro, MA 02703.
