David Charles "Scud" Schofield, 73, of Mendon Road, North Attleboro, died on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at the Madonna Manor Nursing Home in North Attleboro surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was the husband of Elaine M. (Phillips) Schofield to whom he was married on December 9, 1961 at the First Baptist Church in North Attleboro. Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on December 7, 1938, he was a son of the late Wilbrum R. Schofield, Sr. and Helen (Colbourn) Schofield. He resided in Plainville following his birth prior to moving to the Town of North Attleboro at an early age. He was a 1956 graduate of North Attleboro High School and was a graduate of Vermont Academy and University of New Hampshire. He served briefly with the United States Army Reserves prior to transferring to the Massachusetts National Guard where he served for 15 years. He was the owner and operator of Schofield Hardware, Plumbing and Heating Store in North Attleboro for more than 30 years prior to his retirement in 1988. Mr. Schofield and his brother, Russ, took over the original family business, Schofield Hardware, having purchased the business from their father. The business continued growing and the success led to the opening of two additional store locations. The True Value Schofields were located in Attleboro and Mansfield. His continued success was attributed to his work ethic and dedication which made him the entrepreneur that he was. Prior to Mr. Schofield's retirement, the Attleboro and Mansfield locations were sold to the current managers and the main parent store in North Attleboro was sold in 1988. Mr. Schofield was always involved and active in sports from the Little North Attleboro League to football and basketball in high school. He was co-captain of the football team at North Attleboro High School and later played on the football teams at Vermont Academy and the University of New Hampshire. His excellence in sports continued as he became an excellent tennis and racquetball player. Mr. Schofield was a member of the traveling squash team at the Attleboro YMCA. He frequently assisted the Attleboro Y.M.C.A. with fundraising efforts. He enjoyed traveling with his family and upon his early retirement decided to spent five to six months each year in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. The family enjoyed their waterfront home for 23 years prior to the onset of his illness. While in Cape Breton, golf, tennis and squash became part of his daily routine. He enjoyed fishing and boating when not making nature paths through his property to enjoy the beauty of nature, birds and animals. His efforts on the property soon took on the looks of a beautifully manicured park all around the wooded area. His connection with nature was amazing. His greatest pride was his family and their families. His grandchildren affectionately called him "Bumpie" and they were so very dear to his heart and he always encouraged them to follow their hearts and dreams. Mr. Schofield attended the First Baptist Church in North Attleboro where he would often volunteer for fundraising activities. He was a former member of the Bristol Lodge A.F. & A.M. and the Royal Rabboni Chapter. He was a longtime member of the North Attleboro Finance Committee and the Downtown Associates of North Attleboro. Mr. Schofield was fond of music, particularly Celtic and jazz, and was an avid reader. He will be lovingly remembered for his nonjudgmental and trusting ways. In addition to his wife of 50 years, he leaves two daughters: Gretchen Schofield Ranhoff of Alamo, California and Megan S. Grafton of North Attleboro; four grandchildren: Colin and Kyle Grafton of North Attleboro and Elana and Kaela Ranhoff of Alamo, California; a sister: Lynne Stearns of Springfield, Vermont; nine nieces and nephews: Tamara Plourd of Forestville, Connecticut; Timothy Murray of Connecticut; William Schofield of North Attleboro; Robert Schofield of Denver, Colorado; Brie Phillips Williams of Massachusetts; Brooke Wilensky of North Carolina; Keith Stearns of Springfield, Vermont; Jayson Stearns of Springfield, Vermont and Brian D.
