David Morley Bird

David Morley Bird, 69, of Searles Road, Pomfret Center, Connecticut; formerly of Brookline, New Hampshire and Norton; passed away unexpectedly at the Matulatis Nursing Home in Putnam, Connecticut on Saturday, July 6, 2013 following a courageous health battle. He was the husband of Nancy L. (Denham) Bird to whom he was married on September 21, 1986. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee on June 16, 1944, he was the son of the late Laurance V. and Alice (Morely) Bird. He was raised and educated in Peekskill, New York where he was a 1962 graduate of Peeksill High School. He later attended Wentworth Institute in Boston. Mr. Bird was a veteran of the United States Navy from his enlistment on September 6, 1963 until his honorable discharge on January 16, 1967 having earned the rank of Electricians Mate. As a computer software engineer, Mr. Bird was employed at numerous local companies including Texas Instruments, the former Foxboro Company, N.E.C. and Compac. Mr. Bird resided in Pomfret, Connecticut for the past 12 years and formerly resided in Brookline, New Hampshire for 7 years and in Norton for 7 years. His greatest pride came from the accomplishments of his family members and he treasured the time spent with his family in particular attending their events and activities. He both spoiled and adored his feline companion, "Abbey". A lover of Ford Mustangs, Mr. Bird owned "American Muscle", a company that catered to the needs of Mustang owners by providing parts. He enjoyed time spent on his home computer and was a sports enthusiast particularly the New England Patriots, the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Bruins. While employed at Texas Instruments, Mr. Bird was a member of the company's hockey team. In addition to his wife, he leaves a son: David A. Bird of Taunton; twin daughters: Deborah M. (Bird) Bruce, wife of the late George "Rusty" Bruce, of Taunton and Christine A. (Bird) Galhardo and her husband, Paul Galhardo, Jr., of Freetown; his wife's children: Thomas D. Laporte, Attleboro Police Department and his wife, Joanna (Fernandes) Laporte, of Attleboro; Todd C. Laporte and his wife, Antoinette (Murphy) Laporte, of Groveland and Darren J. LaPorte of Lewiston, Maine; ten grandchildren: Ivy, Saige, Harley, Ryan, Sean, Kaleb, Rebecca, Caiden, Hannah and Emily. He was predeceased by his wife's son: David M. Laporte, Jr. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran's Honors on Saturday, July 13, 2013 from 9:00 - 10:00 AM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right, mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Funeral services with Veteran's Honors will immediately follow visitation on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 10:00 AM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right, mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with the Rev. Phillip Goff, officiating. Children's room available during visitation and the funeral service. Graveside services with military honors will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Abington Cemetery, Route 44, Pomfret, Connecticut. Following graveside services an invitation will be extended to join Mr. Bird's family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at the Golden Greek Restaurant, 474 Putnam Pike, Dayville, Connecticut In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Bird's name may be made to the Dyer-Lake Charitable Foundation, Inc., a registered 501 (c) 3 organization, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, North Attleboro, MA 02760 to benefit the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society.
