Daniel John Hamilton

Daniel "Dan" John Hamilton, 89, of Oakridge Avenue, North Attleboro, died unexpectedly at his residence on Saturday, April 11, 2015. He was the beloved husband of Claire A. (Fairburn) Hamilton to whom he was married for more than 60 years. Mr. Hamilton was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on June 19, 1925, the son of the late Arthur and Agnes Frances (Hamilton) Hamilton. He was raised and educated in Somerville where he was a graduate of Somerville High School and was a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Hamilton was a proud veteran of the United States Navy having served from September 2, 1943 until his honorable discharge in April 1946. He was the recipient of the American Theatre Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with Three Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with One Star, the Letter of Commendation and the World War II Victory Medal. He served aboard the USS Colahan, the USS Prichett, the USS Chauncey, the USS Enterprise and the USS Swenning. He was employed by Texas Instruments in Attleboro for more than 30 years prior to his retirement as superintendent at the age of 65. Mr. Hamilton resided in the Town of North Attleboro since 1956 and was an active member of the Bungay Lake Association for many years. He was a former member of the Central Congregational Church in Attleboro Falls where he served as a choir member and was currently a member of the South Attleboro Assembly of God. Mr. Hamilton was a member of the Bristol Lodge AF & AM in North Attleboro and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an ardent boater and devoted sports fan particularly of the Boston Red Sox. He enjoyed performing "handy man" projects around his lakefront home particularly building a deck and playhouse for his family to enjoy. He will be lovingly remembered for his beautiful voice and his enjoyment of whistling the sounds of birds. Proud of his Scottish ancestry, Mr. Hamilton was a member of the Clan Hamilton Society and had served as the Rhode Island Commissioner. In addition to his wife, he leaves: two daughters: Deborah F. Yingling and her husband, John J. Yingling, Jr. of Plymouth and Karen Jean McNamara and her husband, Kevin G. McNamara, of Easton, NH; a son-in-law: John R. Benson, husband of his late daughter, Dyanne Beth (Hamilton) Benson who died on November 22, 2006, of North Attleboro; seven grandchildren: Tamera Lynn McNamara, D.V.M., Jesse R. McNamara, Daniel Lewis Jennett, Brittany Beth Benson, Anna Frances Yingling, Brendon John Benson and Rachel Johanna Yingling; three great grandchildren: Emma Leigh McNamara, Grace Lynn Rosa and Ruby Anne Rosa; 13 nieces and nephews, many dear friends, extended family members and dear friends. He was the brother of the late Andrew Robert Hamilton and his wife, Isabelle (Leary) Hamilton. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran's Honors on Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right, mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Family and friends are welcome to join the funeral procession with Veteran's Honors on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 8:30 AM from the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home followed by a funeral service with bagpiper honors at 10:00 AM at the South Attleboro Assembly of God, 1052 Newport Avenue, South Attleboro. Burial with military and bagpiper honors will follow at North Purchase Cemetery, Attleboro. Following cemetery services an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at the South Attleboro Assembly of God. Flowers are accepted or memorial donations may be made to any local non-profit animal shelter to benefit cat rescue.
