Claire J. (Cheltra) Gariepy, 102, of Attleboro, MA, formerly of North Attleboro, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 22, 2019 at Attleboro Healthcare in Attleboro, where she resided for the past three years. She was the beloved wife of the late Henry Arthur Gariepy who passed away in 1968.
Born on December 2, 1916 in Pawtucket, RI, she was the daughter of the late Joseph T. Cheltra and the late Helen (Mayer) Cheltra.
Raised and educated in Pawtucket, where she attended St. Cecelia's High School, she then resided in North Attleboro for more than eighty years.
Claire had been a communicant of St. Mary's Church in North Attleboro and St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish in Attleboro.
More than anything, she valued her role as a homemaker to her family. Claire enjoyed gardening, often spending five hours a day tending to her gardens until she was eighty. A caring and generous woman, for several years she cooked at a school for the mentally challenged in the Darlington section of Pawtucket, and for more than fifteen years she graciously devoted her time and efforts to the elderly at the Jeanne Jugan Residence - Sisters of the Poor nursing facility in Pawtucket.
She was the loving mother of Donald A. Gariepy of North Attleboro, MA; Jacqueline C. Almeida of Attleboro, MA; Nancy C. Hulbert of Greensboro, NC; John J. Gariepy of Cumberland, RI; and the late Karolyn Fontaine. She was the proud and adoring grandmother of twenty grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Claire was predeceased by her siblings: Sister Leona Cheltra Union of Sacred Heart; Viola Marsh; Cecelia Lussier; Donald Cheltra; Theresa LaCivita; Evelyn Gauvin; Anne Mallal; and George Cheltra.
Friends and relatives are cordially invited attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro.
