Charles Eliot Magraw

August 25, 1926 — December 29, 2013

Of Newton, died on December 29, 2013 after struggling with frontotemporal dementia. Beloved husband of Dolores H. Magraw, father of five children (Chuck, Sukie, Margie, Katherine, and Millie), and grandfather of six. He also leaves an older brother Richard Magraw and many loving relatives. "Chuck" was born August 25, 1926 in St. Paul Minnesota. He went to the University of Minnesota and proceeded directly into the University's medical school, becoming the school's youngest graduate ever at age 20. After serving for two years as a medic in China with the American Friends Service Committee, Chuck and his new wife "Dodie" moved to Rhode Island to do his residency in psychiatry. They moved to Newton in 1955, where they have lived for the past 58 years. Chuck received training as a psychoanalyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, where he remained actively involved for six decades, serving as President for three years and as a teacher and supervisor. Along with Dodie, Chuck was involved in anti-war causes, co-founding the non-profit Medical Aid for Indochina during the Vietnam War. He was also a co-founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility, which later shared a Nobel Peace Prize. He was much loved by many friends, colleagues, patients and family, and will be affectionately remembered for his compassion, terrific tennis game and athleticism, hardworking nature, and decency. Visitation and Funeral Service will be private. For additional information or to send the family a written expression of sympathy, please visit an online guest book at www.dyer-lakefuneralhome.com .
