Caroljean Hempstead Goulder died at home on November 16, 2021, after a long illness.
She was born April 9, 1933, on the family farm near Houston, MN. In her life from birth between the required bookends of birth and death, she became a strong woman with a rich life of love and service.
"Cj" grew up impacted by the Depression and World War II. She was the first rural Outstanding Girl at her school and was Minnesota State Health Princess. She trained her horse to rear on signal, and unsuspecting kids were unceremoniously dumped. Those same kids were life-long friends.
She was a life-long learner, first earning a degree in nursing when only 6% of nurses had college degrees. She taught nursing and was office nurse for two OB-GYN practices. She earned a master's degree in Psychology with a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study and became the first School Psychologist in the Burrillville School District in the early 1970's until 2003. In retirement she became expert in fiber arts and quilting, read voraciously, and learned to play the organ. She taught quilting and life story writing. Life was not all serious-she flew kites, rode carousels, and collected elephant memorabilia.
She considered her greatest achievement to be raising her children. She was very committed to mental health activities and organizations. She delighted in and taught bread baking, quilting, and fun things. The church was important to her for relationships and growing awareness of human and social concerns. She was generous with her time and resources and supported children through Plan International USA since the 1960's.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Orson and Jean Lischer Hempstead; her brother, Dillon Hempstead; husband, John T. Blake; former husband L. L. Goulder, Jr; and grandchildren, Stephen Blake and Ashley Blake. She is survived by her children: Jean Goulder Brown, David Goulder (Diane), Ann Goulder; stepdaughter Patricia Blake; granddaughters: Rachel and Carolyn Goulder, and Meredith Blake; siblings: John Hempstead and Lorna Hempstead Kuyk; several nieces and great nieces and nephew, plus many friends, and colleagues.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The American Lung Association for research on Interstitial Lung Disease.
A service of thanksgiving and remembrance will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church, 500 Hope Street, Providence, RI 02906, on Sunday, November 21, 2021, at 2:00 p.m., with opportunity to greet the family at 1:30 p.m.
