Carlton F. Powers, 83Lifelong Resident and Proud VeteranCarlton F. Powers, 83, of South Attleboro, died on Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Boston Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara Ann (Morris) Powers to whom he was married on June 26, 1948 and who died on January 10, 2007. He was the companion of Barbara S. (Hatfield) Michaud of South Attleboro. Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on March 11, 1927, he was a son of the late Harold F. and Lena F. (Uhlig) Powers. He was a lifelong resident of Attleboro and was a 1945 graduate of Attleboro High School. He later attended and graduated from New England Tech. Mr. Powers was a veteran of the United States Army having served from 1945 - 1946 during the World War II era. He was employed by Bally's Fitness in East Providence, Rhode Island in the maintenance department for seven years prior to his retirement in 1992. He was a former member of the former Bethany Congregational Church in South Attleboro for 52 years and where he had served as the church treasurer for 20 years. Mr. Powers was an active volunteer and served, along with his wife, for the South Attleboro division of the United Way. Mr. and Mrs. Powers were members of the M.M.C. - the Mr. and Mrs. Club, an informal group of couples that raised funds to donate to local charities, for more than 50 years. He treasured the time spent gardening and was an ardent mountain climber having reached the summit of 28 mountains that scaled more than 4,000 feet. He had a particular love for the White Mountains in New Hampshire. He was the brother of the late Robert E. Powers and leaves a brother: Franklin H. Powers of South Attleboro and three generations of nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran's Honors on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the DYER-LAKE FUNERAL HOME, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Those in need of a ride to visitation may call the funeral home at (508) 695-0200 to make an advance reservation for such gratis transportation. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend the funeral service with Veteran's Honors on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 9:30 AM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the DYER-LAKE FUNERAL HOME, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with the Rev. Katrina Clinton, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Newell Burying Ground, South Attleboro. Children's room available during visitation and funeral service. Following cemetery services an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshment at a location to be announced.
