Bertel V. Hoecke, almost 100 years old, of Anawan Road, North Attleboro, died peacefully at his residence on Saturday, July 23, 2011. He was the husband of the late Josephine Jo W. (Walker) Hoecke to whom he was married on February 15, 1941 and who died on June 30, 1999. Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on October 29, 1911, he was a son of the late Cosmos and Amanda I. (Vincent) Hoecke. He was raised and educated in Attleboro where he was a 1930 graduate of Attleboro High School and later the former Pembroke Academy in Providence. An astute businessman, he was a business partner in Standard Metals and S.M. Heat Treatment companies both in North Attleboro. He was a self-employed certified public accountant and financial advisor working with generations of families. Mr. Hoecke resided in North Attleboro since 1942 having first resided on Maple Street in Attleboro Falls. He attended Central Congregational Church in Attleboro Falls with his wife. A champion tennis player, Mr. Hoecke played the sport for decades and at the age of 75 won the Eastern Single Senior Championship at Longwood. An ardent traveler, Mr. and Mrs. Hoecke enjoyed traveling around the world and, in particular, one extended excursion aboard Capt. Eric Johnson's schooner "Yankee" throughout canals in Europe chronicled by National Geographic. He leaves a daughter: Christine Allen Hoecke of Falls Church, Virginia and several extended family members and friends. He was the brother of the late Evelyn Dwinnells. At his request, visitation is respectfully omitted. A private graveside funeral service will be held at the Walker Family Cemetery, Walker Street, North Dighton with the Rev. Kelly Thibeault, Pastor of the First Congregational Church, Old Post Road, North Attleboro, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Hoeckes name and honor may be made to the Dyer-Lake Charitable Foundation, Inc., a registered 501 (c) 3 organization, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, North Attleboro, MA 02760 to benefit the Visiting Nurses Association.
