Basil Peter Vaphiades, 78, of Naugatuck Avenue, Norfolk, died on Friday, June 22, 2012 unexpectedly at Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood. He was the husband of Madeline M. (DiViesti) Vaphiades to whom he was married on November 23, 1958. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on December 27, 1933, he was a son of the late Peter Basil Vaphiades and Ethel (Dracopoulos) Vaphiades Lambert and was the stepson of the late Wilfred A. Lambert. Raised and educated in Providence, Rhode Island, Mr. Vaphiades was class president and class valedictorian at Central High School - Class of 1952. He was a graduate of the former Bryant College. Mr. Vaphiades began his career in the insurance industry as an agent and through numerous promotions was serving as a Vice President of Prudential Insurance in Boston at the time of his retirement 14 years ago. A resident of Norfolk for the past 33 years, Mr. Vaphiades previously resided in West Simsbury, Connecticut, Warwick and Providence, Rhode Island. He was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Cranston, Rhode Island. He also attended services at St. Gregory the Theologian, Mansfield, Massachusetts. He enjoyed deep sea fishing and a good cigar. However, he most treasured time spent surrounded by his family when gathered for Sunday dinners, cookouts around the pool and holidays. In addition to his wife of 53 years, he leaves six children: Peter B. Vaphiades and his wife, Nola (Monti) Vaphiades, of South Attleboro; Lisa A. Ethier and her husband, Marc Ethier, of Franklin; Susan V. Lehoullier and her husband Mark Lehoullier, of Plainville; David W. Vaphiades and his wife, Cynthia (Diamond) Vaphiades, of Norton; Steven T. Vaphiades and his wife, Paula (Bonaminio) Vaphiades, of East Greenwich and Nicole Vaphiades and her fiancé, Tom McCready, of Norwood; 8 grandchildren; Nicholas, Alexandra, Victoria, Taylor, Matthew, Olivia, Madeline and Benjamin; a brother: Theodore E. Vaphiades and his wife, Sue Vaphiades, of Warwick and several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, mile on left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro.
