Barbara A. (Downing) Grimes, 88, of North Attleboro, MA passed away peacefully on December 27, 2021, at the Maples Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wrentham, MA where she resided since November 2020. She was the wife of the late Joseph Francis Grimes who died unexpectedly on March 17, 1974, at the age of 47.
Born in Exeter, Maine on December 9, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Lyall Stanley "Stan" Downing and the late Clara Eva (Cyr) Downing. Raised and educated in Maine, she was a graduate of Corinna Union Academy. She resided in North Attleboro for more than 70 years.
Mrs. Grimes retired at the age of 74 from Dale Medical Products, Inc. after 15 years of service. Previously she was employed by the Town of North Attleboro Parks and Recreation Department as a secretary and as a dietary aide at Fuller Hospital in South Attleboro, MA.
Her favorite pastimes included cooking for her family and caring for her home, which she took great pride in.
She leaves five children: Mark J. Grimes and his wife, Mary A. (Bradley) Grimes of Mansfield, MA; James G. Grimes of Norton, MA; Pamela A. (Grimes) Strong of Plainville, MA; Robin A. (Grimes) Pawlowski and her husband, Stephen Pawlowski, of North Attleboro, MA, and Robert J. Grimes of North Attleboro, MA; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; the surviving siblings of a family of 12 children: Rita Bean of Maine; Nancy Cyr of Maine and Delores Landry of Wrentham, MA. Predeceased by siblings: Althea Gauthier, Zelma Issler, Lyall Downing, Robert Downing, Maynard Downing, Alton Downing, James Downing and Betty Lou Buxton. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A private visitation and funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 6, 2022, in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, MA.
Private burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, MA.
