Aurelia L. "Rae" Scorgie

February 13, 1923 — October 14, 2022

Aurelia L. "Rae" Scorgie, 99, peacefully passed away October 14, 2022, at The Branches Assisted Living Facility, North Attleboro, MA, and under the care of Beacon Hospice.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Alexander Scorgie Jr., who died on February 5, 1993.  She was also predeceased by her beloved daughter, her "Golden Girl", Lisa Jean Evarts, who died on Valentine's Day 2019.
She is survived by her eldest daughter, Stephanie Sloman, and her husband, Wayne Sloman (whom she loved like her son), of Burrillville, RI; five grandchildren: Sean Sloman of Pittsfield, MA, and his wife, Alicia (Cushing) Sloman, Skye (Sloman) Richards of Warwick, RI, and her husband, Brendan Richards, Tristan Evarts, Jaiden Evarts, and Brighton Evarts.  She is also survived by two precious great-grandchildren: Aurelia Sloman (her namesake), and Addilyn Sloman.  She is also survived by her deceased daughter's husband, Brian Evarts.
Mrs. Scorgie was the only child, born in New Bedford, MA, to Leonora (Andrews) Coelho and Frank Martyn Coelho.
Mrs. Scorgie was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, Cambridge Junior College, Portia Law School (cum laude), and she had studied art at the Swain School of Design and had studied classical music with George Armstrong.  At Portia Law School, Mrs. Scorgie was inducted into Phi Delta Delta, an international legal honorary fraternity.  She was a co-founder and the first President of Alpha Phi Lambda, one of the first inter-racial sororities in New England.  She was also President and Director of the Portia Players, a well-known and popular dramatic club at that time. Her school summer vacations were spent working in her mother's and father's "Mom and Pop" store on Cape Cod where she fell in love with Buttermilk Bay (Bourne, MA), and, for the rest of her life, she dreamed of someday going back.
During her working career, Mrs. Scorgie held several different positions.  At Gilchrist Company (Boston, MA), she worked as a collection specialist.  Later, she was a policy analyst at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, and then became an assistant to the Vice President of the Norfolk County Trust Company. Many years later, she worked as a tax preparer for H&R Block.
In 1959, the family moved from Boston to North Attleboro, and Mrs. Scorgie became a stay-at-home Mom.  She considered herself an environmentalist and she was a member of the Ocean Conservancy, The National Wildlife Federation, The World Wildlife Organization, and the National Arbor Day Foundation.  Mrs. Scorgie was a devotee of classical music and was a supporter of the Newport Music Festival of Rhode Island.  She was on the board of directors of the Young Peoples Symphony of Rhode Island and often served as Vice President.  This organization held its Summer Music Camp at Salve Regina College, and Mrs. Scorgie was a chaperone at the camp as long as the camp remained in session.  Mrs. Scorgie loved sports, and, if you knew her, you know that her "joie de vivre" (joy of living) was tennis.  She had a life-long commitment to her favorite sport and was a member of the USTA, the ATP, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.
Mrs. Scorgie's loves were simple:  her family, her friends, the environment, wildlife, music, and, of course, tennis.
Per Mrs. Scorgie's wishes, there will be no services of any kind.  She wanted her friends and family to remember her as the vibrant, loving, caring person that she was while living.
In lieu of flowers, per Mrs. Scorgie's wish, donations can be made to the Burrillville Land Trust, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving open space in Burrillville, RI, PO Box 506, Harrisville, RI  02830.  Mrs. Scorgie's wishes were for all people to do what they can to save the environment and to be kind to everyone--the environment and all creatures, including humans, are connected.
