Arthur Kempton Smith, Jr., 74, of Attleboro, passed away after a very long illness on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, MA. Born on December 29, 1943 in Lynn, MA, he was the son Dorothy Isabel (Jackson) Smith and the late A.K. Smith.A lifelong resident of Attleboro, he attended Perkins School for the Blind and graduated from Attleboro High School, Class of 1963. Arthur worked for Attleboro Enterprises, Inc., and was a devoted member of St. John the Evangelist Church. Lovingly referred to as "Kempie" by family and friends, he was fearless, despite his blindness since birth. He was well known all over Attleboro for his positive attitude, sense of humor, his enjoyment of donuts and determination to walk to downtown to donut shops, Cooper's Store, and the YMCA for his early morning swim. He participated in Special Olympic swimming and diving events as an adolescent. Kempie attended Blind Camp each summer, faithfully playing Reveille and Taps each day. He was a member of the Attleboro Drum and Bugle Corps and sang in the Barbershoppers Group which was the Jewelry City Harmonizers. He worked at the Sheltered Workshop for many years and was an enthusiastic fundraiser for the Salvation Army. He was the dear brother of Dorothy Margaret "Meg" Galasso and her husband, Daniel Robert Galasso, of Attleboro, MA, and Pat Carsten of VT. He leaves his nieces: Wendy Carsten and Jessica Carsten, and Dr. Lisa B. Galasso; Andrew D. Galasso and Adam H. Galasso; his great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces; and many dear cousins and friends. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main Street, Attleboro, MA. There will be a gathering of Kempie's family and friends on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Meg and Dan's house at 118 West Street, Attleboro, MA.A Graveside Burial service will immediately follow church services in St. John's Cemetery, Attleboro, MA.
