Arthur Fong

Arthur "Art" Fong, 88, of Front Street, Cumberland, Rhode Island; formerly of Plainville and North Attleboro, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at his residence following a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of Jennie L. (Lowe) Fong to whom he was married for more than 67 years. Born in China on March 12, 1926, Mr. Fong immigrated to the United States at the age of 12 and settled in Providence, Rhode Island briefly before moving to North Attleboro. He was a 1944 graduate of North Attleboro High School and later briefly attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Mr. Fong served with the United States Navy from his enlistment on June 30, 1944 until his honorable discharge on June 16, 1946 having achieved the rank of Radioman Third Class. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal. A businessman with many ventures, Mr. Fong is most recognized as the founder, owner and operator of Art's Cleaners, Inc. in North Attleboro for more than 50 years. Mr. Fong moved to Cumberland, Rhode Island last week after having resided in Plainville for four years and for many years he had resided on Kelley Boulevard in North Attleboro. He and his family worshipped at Candleberry Chapel in Attleboro. He will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends as a gentle soul, always eager to share a story or laughter, willing to help others and a man with a very strong work ethic. Mr. Fong was a member of several professional dry cleaning associations and as a veteran was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars - Newell-Blais Post #443 in North Attleboro and was past commander of the organization. His favorite pastimes included playing tennis which he enjoyed for decades, bowling, playing Mah Jongg and other card games and fresh and saltwater fishing. In addition to his wife of more than 67 years, he leaves five children: Judith A. Fong of Seattle, Washington; Alison J. Fong and her husband, Joshua Collins, of Rehoboth; Barbara J. Fong and her husband, James Powlan, of Maui, Hawaii; Michael A. Fong and his wife, June (Yeh) Fong of Cumberland, Rhode Island and Jeffrey R. Fong of North Attleboro; four grandchildren: Christopher, Matthew, Dylan and Francesca Fong all of Mansfield; two sisters: June Cho of Houston, Texas and Wah Gate Yim of Plainville and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and many dear friends. He was the brother of the late Daniel P. A. Fong who died on September 24, 2013 and the late Paul Fong who died on November 7, 2011. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran's Honors on Friday, October 17, 2014 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right, mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Funeral Service with Veteran's Honors on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 10:00 AM in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home - the national historic Colonel Obed Robinson Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right, mile on the left), Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with Rev. Kenneth Boyle, Pastor of Candleberry Chapel, Attleboro and dear family friend, officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery and Arboretum, Mount Hope Street, North Attleboro. Children's room is available during the visitation and the funeral service.
