Antti Juhani Autio, 82, of Quincy MA, formerly of Norwood MA, died peacefully on the morning of Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Marina Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he had been actively living since 2013 following hospitalization.Born in Kalmari, Finland on June 11, 1934, he was the son of the late Viktor Autio and the late Rauha (Fält) Autio of Kalmari, Finland.Mr. Autio left Finland in 1956 to go to mining school in South Africa. After a year or so there, living under difficult conditions, he contacted the Canadian Consulate and received assistance to immigrate to Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada to join his older brother who was working there at another mine site. In 1957, he visited Norwood, MA to spend time with aunts and uncles who had previously immigrated there from Finland. During this visit, he met his first wife, Toini "Ellen" Marttinen, and formally immigrated to the United States. They were married in 1958 and resided in Norwood. Together, they had one daughter. In 1968, following a period of sobriety, Mr. Autio married the former Ms. Enrica Marinelli and together they had a daughter and son. Mr. Autio moved to Quincy in 1972.He was a talented craftsman. He worked at Plympton Press and later at Bamber & Sons Co. before he became a licensed contractor and began working independently under his business name of "Handy Andy." Mr. Autio practiced his trade for nearly thirty years, primarily in Norwood and the surrounding communities. He had a very successful business during that period.He was an avid all-season fisherman. His favorite freshwater and ice-fishing holes included New Pond, Cobbs Pond, Kingsbury Pond, and Buckmaster Pond. He also enjoyed deep sea fishing. His signature trip was his Seventieth birthday celebration in Sitka, Alaska, catching halibut and salmon that he shipped home to give to friends and family. He relived those memories for years that followed. Mr. Autio regularly traveled back home to Finland and Canada to visit family and friends. He enjoyed dancing and was a regular patron at the Norwood Elks, American Legion Club, and Concannon's Village in the 1960's to 1980's. He also enjoyed gardening and maintained vegetable and flower gardens at home and assisted others with their home gardens. Most recently, he enjoyed regular excursions outdoors --- watching planes land at Logan Airport, activities on the boardwalk, boats in the marina and throughout Boston Harbor, and bus trips home to sit in the backyard. He was happiest when he was spending time with family and friends. He was a generous man and often shared the bounty of his crops with others.He leaves three beloved children: Anni H. Autio; Carrie L. Autio; and John A. Autio, all of Quincy MA., he was the third of six boys: Veikko (deceased), Arvo, Reino, Eino (deceased, Canada), and Paavo who all reside in Finland.
