Anna Mary (Alfano) Downing, 89, of Plainville, MA, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 4, 2020, at her home. She was the beloved wife of Howard Lewis Downing for 64 years.
Born on February 4, 1931, in East Boston, MA, she was the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Anna Alfano. She met Howard, a Zanesville, OH native, while he was stationed with the Navy in Boston in 1954; they were married the following year.
Anna lived in Plainville for the past 30 years, where she was a member of Saint Martha's Church. For many years she worked as a delicatessen and seafood clerk at Shaw's in North Attleborough, MA, before retiring. She also worked as a clean room technician in Mansfield, MA; a shelf stocker at Spag's in Shrewsbury, MA; a crossing guard in Springvale, ME; and a seamstress on Newbury Street in Boston, MA. She previously lived in El Dorado, AR; Shrewsbury, MA; and Springvale, ME.
She was a warm, loving, and caring woman who treasured her family more than anything and who will sorely be missed by them. She was an avid bird lover, flower gardener, crafter, seamstress, and a great cook of Italian food.
In addition to her husband, Howard, she leaves her two loving children, Robert Downing of Putnam, CT, and Diane King of Atkinson, NH. She was the cherished grandmother of Jennifer Kenny of Yucca Valley, CA, Amanda Davitt of Hooksett, NH, and Jason King of Hampstead,
NH, and the proud great-grandmother of Kelsey Davitt and Lily Kenny. Anna was the sister of Jo Gustenhoven of Reading, MA, and was predeceased by five siblings: Vincent Alfano, Dominic Alfano, Rocco Alfano, Jean Mizell, and Marion Cantone. She also leaves many extended family members and friends, including her nieces and nephews and her sisters- and brothers-in-law in Ohio.
Visitation has respectfully been omitted.
A memorial service for the family will be held privately.
