Mai Kathryn Shang Woo, 96, of Elmhurst, New York, died Saturday April 18, 2020 in New York. She was the beloved wife of Ernest Gosing Woo.
Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on March 13, 1924, Mai was the daughter of Sluhu Moon Shang and Yee See Shang of Canton, China. She was the fourth child in a family of twelve children and second daughter of nine girls. Her brother, Kai Ong Shang, was the three term Mayor of Attleboro, Massachusetts.
Mai was a graduate of Attleboro High School, and a graduate of the Massachusetts Memorial Hospitals School of Nursing, where she served as a nurse. She was also a member of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), the women's branch of the United States Naval Reserve created by President Franklin Roosevelt during WW II. Mai also served as a nurse in hospitals in California and New York.
Mai was a fun-loving woman who enjoyed Broadway shows. She will be missed as a caring nurse, and wonderful wife and mother.
Mai is survived by her husband of seventy years Ernest Gosing Woo; her sons: Ronald Ernest Woo and Kenneth Terrence Woo, both of New York; and her sisters: Olive Shang Manoli of Nevada, Nancy Shang Hsi of Washington; and Joan Shang Wong of Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings: Kai Quong Soohoo, Louise Meiling Yen, Kai Pak Seeto, Kai Ong Shang, Mary Shang Chin, Lily Shang Mooncai, Evelyn Shang On, and Virginia Shang Chang.
A Private Family Service will be held for Mai.
